Our Story

Planting trees, changing lives

How It All Began

Root to Fruit began on the northern shores of Lake Malawi as a small tree-planting project connected to Central African Wilderness Safaris and Chintheche Inn. Southbound Travel was instrumental in helping create the project in its early stages.

A Simple Aim

The original aim was simple: grow seedlings locally and distribute them to nearby communities free of charge. That simple idea grew into a long-term community reforestation programme. Today, Root to Fruit works with nurseries, staff, Tree Clubs, schools, partners and local communities to plant species that are useful, resilient and valued. The trees provide fruit, shade, soil protection, medicine, coppiced firewood and income opportunities, while also contributing to long-term climate resilience.

Now, as a registered environmental NGO in Malawi, Root to Fruit focuses on planting useful trees, helping them survive and making the benefits visible through GPS-linked records, community stewardship and long-term monitoring.
